A writer encounters the owner of an ageing, run-down, once-magnificent hotel in the fictional eastern European country of Zubrowska. The owner tells him of his early years as a lobby boy during the Second World War, and in flashbacks, the extraordinary plot twists and events illustrate just how he came to own the hotel. Nominated for 8 Oscars, won 4.
